The role of a psychologist

The psychologist is a mental health professional who helps us face daily challenges through psychotherapy, which means healing through speech (dialogical therapy).

The psychologist works according to the ethical code of the profession, ensuring client-therapist confidentiality. By building a relationship of trust, we discuss our difficulties, and they help us understand, face, and overcome them.

Visiting a psychologist does not mean we are “sick,” nor will we be labeled because of therapy. Usually, the reasons that prompt us to seek a psychologist are everyday, human, and happen to others around us, but we experience them as if we are at an impasse.

Often, when we express our concerns, we hear responses like “just get over it.” However, human needs, emotions, and struggles, as well as the need for connection and validation, are fundamental and cannot simply be “overcome.”

What we truly need is to learn how to manage our anxiety, express our anger and sadness, control our impulses, recognize and articulate our needs, and above all, stop hurting ourselves.
